Looney Liberal of the Week: Jimmy Carter

NEW HAVEN, CT -- This week's award goes to former President Jimmy Carter for remarks he made bad-mouthing Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT). According to a statement which I heard on the radio (and cannot quote verbatim), Carter essentially said that Lieberman's problem is... "He voted for the war in Iraq. He has maintained a position that the war in Iraq was the right thing to do. He has stood by the President and Republicans in support of the war." Carter then went on to say that, "I've lost my confidence in Joe Lieberman and don't wish to see him re-elected."

OK, so let me get this straight. Joe Lieberman voted for the war in Iraq (as did most Democrats including John Kerry and Hillary Clinton). No problem so far.

Then, Joe Lieberman maintained a consistent position on the issue. He didn't waffle or flip-flop for purely partisan reasons. Hmmmm... I guess that's a bad thing.

Finally, Lieberman stood by the President in a show of patriotism during a time of war. And the problem with that is ...?

OHHH! Now I get it! Joe Lieberman is not a waffling, flip-flopping, partisan hack. He can be trusted to maintain a steady position on an issue even when it may not be popular. He has views on issues that are principled and not poll-driven. He has more concerns about national security interests than he does about the next election. He is patriotic. He supports the troops. And he is intellectually honest.

NOW I understand why Carter has lost confidence in Joe Lieberman! How can Joe consider himself a loyal Democrat and still act like that? Silly me.

Hawkeye -

Jimmy Carter could easily be the Dumbass/Looney Liberal of any given DECADE that he has been in the public eye.

Easily the worst president during my lifetime...and that includes Nixon. This guy shouldn't even form the words "war" or "troops" without gagging. He is largely responsible for the middle eastern mess we are in right now - esp concerning Iran and all of its influences.

Cheers! Timmer

There's nothing more ludicrous that insinutating that not supporting Bush on the disastrous war in Iraq is to be unpatriotic as you have suggested so.

America is on its road to ruin and it's only because of the existence of dumb-ass hicks like you and your friends who contribute to this blog.

When will you wake up and realize that there is no way to win this war? Hell, tons of influential conservatives (e.g. William Buckley) have already come out and slammed Bush for the way he brought the country into Iraq.

The only ones left who are still supporting Bush are the delusional ones like yourselves. You guys might get a rise out of dreaming of a rosy ending in Iraq by "staying the course" but it's not gonna happen. If conservative intellectuals are sharply criticizing the conduct of the war, it won't be too long before the Republicans decide to pull the plug.

Case in point: Harriet Miers nomination

Gee Whiz ,West Coast Liberal, what country are you on the West Coast of, Iran or Syria? You can't write English very well ,and obviously your heart is in the wrong place.
Why don't you take Jimmuh home with you and let him run your Country. At least then your country would give up and whine a lot.
You certainly don't understand how the USA works. We don't execute our ex-president.
It's too bad Carter's family doesn't get some help for his Senile Dementia.Remember how he used to run around with that sappy artificial smile on his face ,it just never reached his cold beady eyes.

you and the other clowns in this blog have nothing left. When your own people start to abandon you, you are left clinging onto delusion.

Some more examples of the conservative elite abandoning Bush.

This was written just last week.

“The United States has seen political swings and produced its share of extremists, but its political character, whether liberals or conservatives have been in charge, has always remained fundamentally Burkean. The constitution itself is a Burkean document, one that slows down decisions to allow for ‘deliberate sense’ and checks and balances.

“President Bush has nearly upended that tradition, abandoning traditional realism in favour of a warped and incoherent brand of idealism. At this dangerous point in history, we must depend on the decisions of an astonishingly feckless chief executive: an empty vessel filled with equal parts Rove and Rousseau.”

Jeffrey Hart, speech writer for Reagan and Nixon
