Looney Liberal of the Week: Jon Corzine

TRENTON, NJ -- This week's award goes to Jon Corzine, Governor of the State of New Jersey, for shutting down the state government in order to impose a tax hike on the already over-burdened people of New Jersey, and thereby breaking his campaign promise to NOT raise taxes. Read my lips: What an idiot.

The State of New Jersey has had budget problems for years due to the fiscally irresponsible Democratic leadership in Trenton. Corzine can't blame his problems on Republicans, because the state has been controlled by Democrats since at least 2002. There has been a Democratic governor in place since 2001. The result has been a $4.5 billion budget deficit, which stems primarily from the fact that NJ's government employee pension plan has been going unfunded for a number of years, and is now UNDER-funded.

New Jersey has had budget problems for years, but this is the first time the state government was shut down. Corzine did this for only one reason, to get his sales tax hike through. Although he ran on a platform of NOT raising taxes, he back-tracked on that promise almost the minute he got into office. He not only wanted to raise the sales tax, but the income tax and other taxes as well. It figures... he's a typical "tax-and-spend" Democrat. Corzine and the Democratically-controlled Assembly and Senate have made absolutely no efforts to cut spending. State Republicans have identified $2.2 billion in savings, but the Democrats have not acted. To make matters worse, this proposed $2 billion tax hike will not cover the proposed $3 billion increase in spending!

In order to make this tax hike more palatable, the Dems in Trenton have decided to use "half" the money raised by the sales tax hike to offset property taxes. On the surface that sounds good... eliminating a mandatory property tax and replacing it with a discretionary sales tax. But this offset has disadvantages as well. First, it will impact the state economy because people will buy less. Second, if people buy dramatically less, it will impact state revenues and bring us back to square one. Third, the citizens of New Jersey will lose a deduction on their federal income tax by paying lower property taxes, thus increasing their federal tax burden as well as their state tax burden! Why should we leave the Feds out of this financial give-away?

New Jersey already pays more to the federal government than it receives, making it a "donor" state. In other words, NJ citizens are paying for subsidies to other states. In fact, NJ ranks "50th" in terms of amount received from the feds versus amount paid to the feds. In 2004, NJ received only 55 cents for every dollar paid.

New Jersey's property taxes are currently the highest per capita in the nation (no doubt why the Democrats want to reduce them). New Jersey's corporate taxes are the 8th highest in the nation. New Jersey ranks 49th in the Tax Foundation's State Business Tax Climate Index. So what's a Dem to do? Raise taxes of course!

And why not furlough 45,000 state employees in the process, forcing them to lose a week's pay? And why not make the remaining 36,000 state employees remain on the job without pay? And why not force local businesses to lose thousands of dollars in revenue? And why not force casinos to lose millions of dollars of revenue? And why not have the state lose an estimated $1.3 million per day in revenue? After all, we can just raise more taxes to cover the shortfall!

You know, this is the perfect example of a liberal state. If conservatives got on a boat and shipped themselves to Conservative land, NJ is what Democrats would do to the whole country. I thought shutting down the government was an interesting idea, but the reason they're there to begin with and the tax hikes are what are really significant.

I heard Corzine saying on Friday that he reduced the state budget by 2.5 billion dollars. How can that be and the government still needed to be shut down? It doesn't add up. Not just that,I hear the cigarette tax in NJ is going up to $2.75 a pack? Holy Cow! I don't smoke but don't know how anyone in NJ could.

There's a reason why so many New Jerseyans are moving to Republican held Florida.

I don't comment here nearly as much as I read.

Is there something I should be saying about this moonbat? He gives the loons in the People's Republic of Massachusetts a run for thir money.

The 2000 census says only one in seven people living in Georgia were born here. It's not hard to see why, despite the fact we have the highest cigarette and beer taxes in the country.

Most folks with a smidgeon of sense end up here, even if we do pay too much for our vices. I-75 hits a dead end in Atlanta, and y'all can spatter out across the countryside from there. Marry our women, breathe our air, and smoke our cigarettes and drink our beer. Just don't tell us how y'all do it up North, 'cause we don't care. If you want a Garden State, you'll move next door to Corzine.

(Actually, I think I-75 ends in Florida, but you get the idea. Who wants to make a crash landing there?)

Amy, If New Jersey was that liberal then Jim Mr Greevey wouldn't have left the way he did. As for Florida, that is the reason I don't vote. After the National Fiasco, Our votes in Jersey don't count when the Gov. could give his brother the Presidency. Keep the holier than thou attitude

Hi Amy,
Thanks for stopping by. You're right about NJ. As far as I'm concerned, NJ has been screwed up since 1864 when they put forward George McClellan to run againt Abraham Lincoln. McClellan was running as a Democrat on an anti-war platform at a time when it looked certain that Lincoln was winning the war. (Sound familiar?)

This is the same General McClellan who was a failure on the battlefield and was eventually removed by Lincoln. He then became insubordinate and was relieved of command. After losing the election of 1864, New Jersey rewarded him by making him Governor. Sheesh!

Camo,
Well I guess I'm no casino or gambling fan, but it sure brings in a lot of revenue to the state.

Hey Possum,
My brother lives in Georgia... near Atlanta. He's been there 20+ years. He works for Delta. (They're certainly having their share of problems.) Says there's been a drought there for awhile, eh? Or have you gotten some rain in the last week or two?

Actually, I live only about 10 miles from the Governor's mansion. I would love to have a garden in the Garden State, but between the trees, the clay, the deer, the rabbits and the birds, I can't seem to grow hardly anything!

Anonymous,
Believe me, New Jersey is THAT liberal. Jim McGreevey didn't leave office because he was gay (although that's what he said). In fact, I don't think many peoople even cared whether he was gay or not. He left office because he appointed his gay lover to a position of authority in the NJ Homeland Security Department. A position for which he was not qualified in any way, shape or form.

Marry our women
breathe our air,
Just don't tell us how
y'all do it up North,
We don't give a dang
'cause we don't care.

What have we got ?
We got the Georgia Trot!

I sincerely (without wax) doubt it, when you look at the "big picture"...although I'm sure it lines somebody's pockets quite nicely. The hidden costs are just part of the reason why Jersey operates at a deficit. Now we're going to have legalized gambling in PA too. O joy of joys!
